Registration is now open for the 2010 NSW October Veteran Team Event.  The event will be at Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre, corner of Forest Road and King Georges Road.

Congratulations to the New South Wales Under 19 Team returned from the week-long international under-19 events in Launceston last week.

NSW team finished at the top of their pool, Pool B, undefeated in the round robin matches.  Other Pool B teams are Victoria 1, Mainland New Zealand, South Australia and West Australia.

The week concluded with the top two teams, NSW and Northern New Zealand (top of Pool A) playing off for the gold medal in the CP Maddern Trophy event.

The top New Zealand team defeated the top Australian team 11 rubbers to 5 after 16 matches were played involving 8 singles, 4 doubles and 4 mixed doubles in the final.

Northern New Zealand were off to a good start winning the first four doubles rubbers.  But the NSW no. 4 women singles, Caroline Hu and the no. 3 women singles Buddhima Fernando won their tough matches in 3 games reducing the Northern New Zealand lead to 6 rubbers to 2.

Highlight of the final was the match between the NSW no.1 men singles, Honesto Buendia III and the Northern New Zealand no. 1 and New Zealand no. 1 junior singles player, Luke Charlesworth.  Honesto defeated Luke in a hard fought three games match, 21-17, 16-21, 21-14.

NSW mixed doubles pairs then fought hard to claim two of the four mixed doubles to make the final score line 11-5 in favour of Northern New Zealand.  There were 7 three-game matches and NSW won 4 of these matches.  NSW finishes with the silver medal from the championships.

In the contest for the bronze medal, Queensland defeated Victoria no. 1 team by 9 rubbers to 7.  Click here for detailed results of the CP Maddern Trophy

Early in the week, NSW players competed in the 2010 Australian Juniors International.  Some players did not do well in the main draw.  However these players have excelled in the Plate events captured all the Plate titles.  All finalists in the men singles and mixed doubles are NSW players.  Buddhima Fernando won both the Plate women singles and women doubles.  Melinda Sun won both the Plate women doubles and mixed doubles.  Winners of the Plate titles from NSW are:

•           Men singles – Lucas Bui
•           Women singles – Buddhima Fernando
•           Men doubles – Honesto Buendia III – Brendan Tieu
•           Women doubles – Buddhima Fernando – Melinda Sun
•           Mixed doubles – Melinda Sun – Cham Chen

2010 State Team for the Val Nesbitt Trophy and National Under 15 Championship: Coordinator, Coach, Manager, Umpire and Players sought

New South Wales Badminton Association is seeking expressions of interest from Coordinators, Coaches, Managers, Umpires and Players for the 2010 Val Nesbitt Trophy and National Under 15 Championship.  The event will be held in Shepparton, Victoria, from Tuesday 28 September to Saturday 2 October 2010.

Please submit your entry form by the due date of Wednesday 27th January 2010 so that the Tournament Committee can schedule courts and matches.  Please note that all registrations have to be accompanied by payment before the tournament starts on Saturday 6th February 2010.
