News Flash around the state!

1) Stuart Gomez and Eva Ratanasena represented the Australian Under 23 Team that competed against New Zealand in Ballarat (3rd-5th June 2005). New Zealand had a narrow win. Results here.

2) Eva Ratanasena also won the plate event at the prestigious Babolat North Harbour International tournament in New Zealand (10th-12th June 2005).

3) Kenny Ng and Spoorti Rattan have been selected to represent the Australian Under 19 Team to go to the Pan Pacific Junior Championships in Vancouver, Canada. The team leaves in late July and will be attending two tournaments – one in Vancouver and one in LA – as well as head to head test matches with Canada, New Zealand, USA, Taiwan and 2 teams from South America.

4) Ben Gomez and Marianne Loh have recently gained Level 2 Umpiring accreditation.

5) Phillip Wong has recently gained Level 2 Coaching Accreditation, while Eva Chiu has recently gained Level 1 (advanced) Coaching Accreditation. Other aspiring coaches are requested to register their interest with NSWBA. To those who have attended the coaching courses this year but yet to complete all their accreditation requirements, please make appropriate arrangements as soon as possible. Thank you.

Open Squad Training

The NSW State Open Squad Training has been occuring every Sunday at UNSW from 1pm-4pm. All interested athletes are advised to confirm their interest in representing the team to travel to Melbourne from 5th-11th September this year. They are encouraged to attend the training with the squad.

Support your team!

The Sudirman Cup is well under way in Beijing Capital Gymnasium, China. Today, Wednesday 11th May 2005, New South Wales State and Australian international representative Stuart Gomez played and won his first Sudirman Cup Men's Singles match. Stuart played the first match in Australia's tie against Peru, beating CF Andres 15- 2, 15-6 in 20 minutes. Stuart is fresh from his recent two months of gruelling training under former international umpire, head coach, Kim Young Man of Korea at the International Badminton Federation (IBF) Saarbrucken training facility in Germany. Australia also won its first tie against South Africa 5-0.

Congratulations to the Under 17 NSW State Teams for a respectable 4th and 12th placing at the recent June Bevan Trophy Carnival. Congratulations to Kenny Ng who also claimed 3 titles (Boys Singles, Boys Doubles, and Mixed Doubles) at the Australasian Under 17 Championships during the same week!

The University of Sydney Badminton Club has held its 2005 Autumn Doubles Tournament over the weekend. Although there were late starts on both days, the turn out of players were extremely good, and it was very much enjoyed by most players and spectators. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all for participating.

The 2005 CP Maddern Trophy and Australasian Under 19 Championships will be hosted by New South Wales. Our home team is defending the team title and expects fierce competition from other states.
