Five of Australia’s top badminton players have successfully qualified for the Beijing Olympics, with Australia represented in the men’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles events. Despite tough competition from top players in Asia, who perpetually dominate the sport, the Australian team is excited to be representing their country and looking forward to the experience of competing against the best in the world. New South Wales will be represented by 25 year old Stuart Gomez in the men's singles.

2008 NSW Open

Please find attached the above tournament entry form for your participation as a player, court official or event personnel. The UNSW club would be delighted to have as many as possible attend and would appreciate your registration by the due date of 20th June 2008 so that the Tournament Committee can schedule courts and matches cost effectively.

Please note that all registrations have to be accompanied by payment before the tournament starts on that weekend if entries are emailed or faxed. This will allow us to focus on conducting the tournament rather than chasing payments on the day. Refunds will be permissible under mitigating circumstances given due consideration by the Tournament Committee.

Continued Search for National Champions

Please see attached the 2008 NSW Elite Junior Squad selection criteria. Applications must be accompanied by a copy of the athlete's results over the last 12 months along with a statement of their goal(s) and date of birth. Applications close on 6th June 2008.

At the same time, we are again calling for coaches/feeders to be part of the squad on a regular basis. This position requires the applicant to be fully committed to the objectives and goals set out for the squad. Applications for this position can also be emailed to the coordinator. Services rendered are expected to be voluntary, however, a small remuneration may be negotiated.

2008 Clendinnen Shield: NSW Team Players, Manager, Coach, Umpire sought

New South Wales Badminton Association is seeking expressions of interest for manager, coach, or umpire to look after the preparation, and travel with the senior team to the 2008 Clendinnen Shield and Australian Closed Championships.

Dates: Travel on or around 31st August - 6th September 2008.

Please forward nominations, expression of interest, or questions as soon as possible to Jerome Gomez as entries to the tournament is closing.

Level 1A Badminton Coaching Course

There are now 15 people registered through different clubs in NSW for the upcoming coaching course. The course details are:

Location: Hornsby PCYC, 94 George Street, Hornsby
Time: 9.00am-5.00pm daily

2008 U15 Team Manager, Coach, Umpire sought

New South Wales Badminton Association is seeking expressions of interest for manager, coach, or umpire to look after the preparation, and travel with the Under 15 team to the 2008 Val Nesbitt and Under 15 Australian Carnival.

Dates: Travel on or around 2nd October - 5th October 2008.

NSW Badminton Training Camp

Please find attached a proposal for a training camp to be held in Newcastle. Applications will predominantly be accepted on a first come first serve basis. This will close on Wednesday 05 March. Coaches are also invited to attend. Apologies for the short notice, but we needed to make accommodation bookings in the next week!

Success at U13 Interstate Series

Congratulations to the NSW Team 1 who beat VIC Team 1 in the 2008 Australian U13 Interstate Series to finish first in the team event. NSW Team 2 finished fourth.

Special mention to Melinda Sun and Toby Wong who also took out the singles in the individual events. NSW also dominated the finals of the boys doubles, with Toby Wong and Seng Low finishing runners-up to winners Aaron Chu and Cham Chen. In the girls doubles, Melinda Sun and Christine Yu finished runners-up.

2008 U19 Squad Selection

A NSW Under 19 Badminton Team will be selected to participate in the CP Maddern Tournament to be held in Geraldton, WA from 5th July 2008 (Sat) to 12th July 2008 (Sat). A selection event will be undertaken to choose the potential players to represent NSW to participate in the above carnival. The selection details are stated in the file attached. Registration will be closed on the 14th February 2008.

2008 U19 Team Manager & Team Coach sought

New South Wales Badminton Association is seeking expressions of interest for 1 manager and 1 coach to look after the preparation, and travel with the Under 19 team to the 2008 CP Maddern and Under 19 Australasian Championships.

Dates: Travel on or around 5th July - 13th July 2008.
