2012 NSW State Teams for the June Bevan Trophy and Under 17 Nationals

Application is now open for players of the NSW State Teams to compete in the 2012 June Bevan Trophy and Under 17 Nationals.  The events will be held in Hobart, Tasmania, 7-14 April 2012.

New South Wales Badminton Association is seeking expression of interest from Coaches, Managers and Umpires for the 2012 Under 13 and Under 17 tournaments.

The 2012 Under 13 Interstate Series and Regional Teams Challenge events will be held in Altona, Victoria, 13-14 January 2012.

The 2012 June Bevan Trophy and Under 17 Nationals events will be held in Hobart, Tasmania, 7-14 April 2012.

NSW won the 2011 Ede Clendinnen Shield

Congratulation to the NSW Team won the 2011 Ede Clendinnen Shield in Burnie, Tasmania. NSW beat Victoria 8-5 in the play-off for the Shield.  The NSW team includes the following players:

Australian Team won the 2011 Pan Pacific Championships

Congratulations to the Australian Team reclaimed the 2011 Pan Pacific Championships in Ballarat. Australia 1 beat last year’s champion – New Zealand, Australia 2 and newcomer – Singapore Sports School.  It is good to see Singapore Sports School to compete for the first time in the Championships.

NSW Under 17 Team won Bronze medal at the 2011 Australasian June Bevan Trophy

Congratulations to the NSW Under 17 team Thunder finished 3^rd place in the 2011 Australasian June Bevan Trophy. NSW Thunder dominated most of team matches (won mainly 16-0) in the round robins, with the only loss to the eventual champion, Northern New Zealand 1.

The second team, NSW Lightning finished at 8 out of 18 teams. This is a very good result for a team with 6 players who still qualify to participate in next year Under 17 events.

NSW players also performed well in the Individual and end up with 8 players (4 boys and 4 girls) in the Australasian top 10 girls and top 10 boys ranking list. NSW has the biggest number of top 10 players for the tournament. One of the best results ever- Click here for details.

In 2011 the Badminton Australia Elite Junior Program will be moving towards a more structured program to help Australian juniors strive for excellence and develop into future Australian team and world class players.

Badminton Australia has put into place a structure to ensure talented junior players are nurtured and developed through access to high class international competition and professional training environment.

Congratulations to the New South Wales Under 15 teams, the NSW Thunder team finished second and the NSW Lightning team finished 6th at the 2010 Val Nesbitt Trophy held in Shepparton, Victoria from 27 September to 2 October.  Victoria 1 came first and Victoria 2 finishes third.

In addition to the team success, NSW players have performed well in the Individual events. NSW players appeared in the final of all events (Main and Consolation draws) except the Girls Doubles in the main draw. Six NSW players were awarded top ten ranking in the 2010 Under 15 National Carnival.  Daniel Guda collected top honour of all three events - Boys Singles, Boys Doubles and Mixed Doubles

New South Wales Badminton Association is seeking expressions of interest from Coaches, Managers, Umpires and Players for the Under 23 Team Event and Individual Championships.  The event will be held by the Western Suburb Badminton Association (Victoria) in Altona, Victoria from Wednesday 1st to Friday 3rd December 2010.

Players have to be 19 years or older and under the age of 23 as at December 31, 2010.

Team format will be 2 Men Singles, 2 Ladies Singles, 1 Men Doubles, 1 Ladies Doubles and 2 Mixed Doubles.  All matches will be rally point, best of three games to 21.

Individual events will be held in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles.  Matches will be round robin.  All individual matches will be rally point, best of three games to 21.

Entry fees will be $100.00 per player if competing in both the Team and Individual events.  Otherwise it will be $50.00 per player to the Individual events.

Entry fees, travel, accommodation and related expenses are self-funded by participants.

Congratulations to the New South Wales Under 19 Team returned from the week-long international under-19 events in Launceston last week.

NSW team finished at the top of their pool, Pool B, undefeated in the round robin matches.  Other Pool B teams are Victoria 1, Mainland New Zealand, South Australia and West Australia.

The week concluded with the top two teams, NSW and Northern New Zealand (top of Pool A) playing off for the gold medal in the CP Maddern Trophy event.

The top New Zealand team defeated the top Australian team 11 rubbers to 5 after 16 matches were played involving 8 singles, 4 doubles and 4 mixed doubles in the final.

Northern New Zealand were off to a good start winning the first four doubles rubbers.  But the NSW no. 4 women singles, Caroline Hu and the no. 3 women singles Buddhima Fernando won their tough matches in 3 games reducing the Northern New Zealand lead to 6 rubbers to 2.

Highlight of the final was the match between the NSW no.1 men singles, Honesto Buendia III and the Northern New Zealand no. 1 and New Zealand no. 1 junior singles player, Luke Charlesworth.  Honesto defeated Luke in a hard fought three games match, 21-17, 16-21, 21-14.

NSW mixed doubles pairs then fought hard to claim two of the four mixed doubles to make the final score line 11-5 in favour of Northern New Zealand.  There were 7 three-game matches and NSW won 4 of these matches.  NSW finishes with the silver medal from the championships.

In the contest for the bronze medal, Queensland defeated Victoria no. 1 team by 9 rubbers to 7.  Click here for detailed results of the CP Maddern Trophy

Early in the week, NSW players competed in the 2010 Australian Juniors International.  Some players did not do well in the main draw.  However these players have excelled in the Plate events captured all the Plate titles.  All finalists in the men singles and mixed doubles are NSW players.  Buddhima Fernando won both the Plate women singles and women doubles.  Melinda Sun won both the Plate women doubles and mixed doubles.  Winners of the Plate titles from NSW are:

•           Men doubles – Honesto Buendia III – Brendan Tieu
